Dear Computer Architecture Class:

The shift left logical effect of multiplying by 2 to the n-th, where n is
the number of bits being shifted, is for unsigned integers.

When shifting left for signed integers, multiplying by 2 to the n-th may
not always occur due to the sign bit.
